I said to my students, in closing this unit on the American Civil Rights Movement, that I knew they would forget the dates and the names of the people involved. What I was confident in, what I would be willing to bet on, was that they would remember "the lines that divide," the concept of "resistance," and the power of public opinion. I told them they could frame any historical or current event with these three themes, from the Collapse of the Roman Empire to the Refugee Crisis in Syria, and that they would blow their teachers' minds! They have yet to prove me wrong.
