Rosa Parks' non-compliance with the rules of the Montgomery Public Transit was a significant beginning to a new era of activism within the Civil Rights Movement. The Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted about a year, had ripple effects on the whole city. White people were losing money. The whole country was paying attention. Martin Luther King, a young well-spoken Baptist minister, was getting more and more people involved. He was a persuasive and compelling voice for mobilizing the boycott and encouraging patience.
Even still, gains were measured across years and with a great deal of resistance. It took time to unite the many organizations that represented equality for African American people. The Freedom Rides of 1961 and the March from Selma to Montgomery for voter rights in 1965 were two events among many that drew attention to unequal opportunity, particularly in the Southern States. |
